The Church: Between Gospel and Culture - The Emerging Mission in North America - Edited by Hunsberger, Van Gelder
This book consists of a series of essays written about the issue of mission in North America. Not only does the book address the need for a postmodern understanding of life in the West, but also points out that until recently the Church has still been working out of a Christendom mindset- in a culture that is decidedly post-Christian. You're not likely to find a book that is more comprehensive in addressing the pertinant issues.

Sex, Economy, Freedom and Community - Wendell Berry
Wendell Berry is one of those rare authors who seems to be able to talk about "hot button" issues with poise and onjectivity; and without seeming to come across as wholeheartedly "Left" or "Right". In Sex, Economy, Freedom and Community Berry offers eight essays, covering important topics such as environmental awareness and sustainability, decentralization, and renewal of community. This book definitely sets its sights on modernism and the implications of industrialism.

The Last Word and the Word After That - Brian McLaren
It is a rare thing indeed for one author to make three appearances within a canon such as this. But it is difficult indeed to deny this of Brian McLaren- whose works have proven more influential than any other writer's over the last half decade or so. In this the final chapter in the A New Kind Of Chrisitian series McLaren bravely tackes the issue of Hell. Regardless of where you end up with the issue this book does a great job of outlining the historical forces behind the various traditional views of Hell and divine judgement.

The Gospel in a Pluralist Society - Leslie Newbigin
The issue of cross-cultural missions has been discussed for generations. But Leslie Newbigin was the one of the first to break new ground by addressing the way that the gospel is enculturated within a particular society. Newbigin has several books that in general address this issue. The Gospel in a Pluralist Society takes on the context within which North Amercian mission is framed. Many of the ideas that Newbigin developed are now cornerstones within missiology.
